New Club Clothing has Arrived!
Great news! We have just taken delivery of the new kit. And very smart it looks too. In order to get this to as many people as quickly as possible, the kit will be available for collection and purchase from The White Horse Pub, on Monday 15th February 2010 between 7.30pm and 8.30pm. We will be based in the downstairs function room at the rear of the pub. If you have items on order, please come along to collect them. Do not forget to bring your cheque book for the balance due. If you haven't ordered kit and want to do so, please come along as our stock of jerseys and shorts will be available for purchase. For those of you who cannot make this Monday, the clothing will be available after Monday (not before) from Clothing Secretary Clive Rayner.

Neil Vaughan reports that there has been an excellent response, but there are still 9 places available for this Club trip to Wells on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th February. The cost is only £20 plus your meal on the Saturday night.   You can view the Menu here (Word Required).  Members are coming from London and Leeds so don’t miss out. Two female Club members have already booked, so, if you are female and were concerned you might be the only one, don't be. Please send your cheque for £20 payable to "Velo Club Norwich" to Neil at 40 Chestnut Hill, Eaton, Norwich, NR4 6NL.

VC Norwich 2009 Race Report

Written by Robert Stronge

VC Norwich
hosted its annual race in the Eastern Road Race League at Wicklewood, Norfolk on Sunday 12th July 2009.  A full field of 60 riders, including 6 from VCN, set off to cover 57 miles of racing over 5 laps.  Although it was dry, turning to sunny and warm during the morning, the overnight rain took its toll, with many riders suffering punctures, including VCN member Chris Barlett just after the start of the first lap.

An early breakaway, including VCN rider Mark Farrow, was eventually caught.  There then followed a two man break which was 45 seconds ahead when the main peloton was hampered on the last lap by a horse on the course which lost them another minute.  VCN junior Tom Doe was dropped twice on Melton Road on the last lap, due in part to the 35 mph speed and his only being allowed to use junior gears, but through a magnificent effort managed to catch the main bunch.

Geoff Frost of API Metrow had nothing left on the final climb to the finish line and was overhauled by Diss CC rider Richard Dunnett, who had suffered a front-wheel puncture on the last lap, to take first place.  Top VCN finisher was Mark Farrow, with Neil Vaughan, Tim Lenton and Tom Doe amongst the sprint in the main bunch at the end.  Well done to the following riders who represented the club in the race:

Chris Bartlett                       Tom Doe                                            Mark Farrow

Rob Hobbs                           Tim Lenton                                        Neil Vaughan

Prizes were presented back at race HQ by Race Organiser David Davies and General Secretary Rob Smith, including vouchers for the podium places donated by Pedal Revolution and a wonderful chocolate trophy created and presented to the first team Ipswich BC by Gary (“Heart Attack”) Funnell of Saffire Chocolates. Our thanks to both companies for their support.

The results can be dowloaded from this link.

Photos of the race can be viewed, and purchased, at club member Mark Cozens website at http://www.mphotography.smugmug.com/

The success of this race was due, once again, to the efforts of a large group of officials, drivers, licensing stewards, paramedics, kitchen staff, and a small army of  marshals and helpers.  Without their commitment it would not be possible to run such an event.

Special thanks go to David Davies, who took on the responsibility and stress of Race Organiser this year.  The Race Commissaire was very complimentary about the quality of the marshalling, noting that we were actively controlling each point, rather than acting as mere spectators.  The trouble with doing such a good job is that you will be asked again!  So many thanks and congratulations to the following for turning out of your beds at such an ungodly hour on a Sunday morning (we didn’t decide to bring the start time forward to 8.30 am, honest) and for giving up your time, both on the day and beforehand:

Tony Asplin Derek Lusher David Davies
Barry Smith Joanne Vaughan Clive Rayner
Jenny Lusher Corinne Gittings & sister Ian Doe
Phil Hargreaves Tom Fisher Nick Kidd
Dieter Rowe Rob Smith Barry Slater
Neil Vaughan Malcolm Brown Richard Campeney
Jim Moss Simon Fermor Robert Stronge
Trevor Matsell Stewart Lyons George Stronge
Gary Funnell Stephen Crossland Paul Osborne
Peter Cornwall Faye Walker Michael Wild
St. Johns Ambulance Peter Walker Roger Thomas
Roger Graham Nigel Boulton Tony Reynolds
Markos Janes Sally Withey Mike van der Es
Graham O’Hara Bob Carter Stan Walker

Tour of North Norfolk 2010

GREAT NEWS!!!  THIS YEAR'S VC NORWICH CLUB WEEKEND TO WELLS-NEXT-THE SEA WILL TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAY 27th & SUNDAY 28th FEBRUARY 2010.

If you went on the inaugural Tour of Norfolk last year, or have spoken to anyone who was there, you will know what a great weekend this is.

We leave on the Saturday morning from Norwich, spend the day riding to Wells-next-the-Sea, enjoy the Wells nightlife, (there really is a nightlife) stay overnight and ride back together Sunday.  Simples!

Neil Vaughan, who organised last year's successful trip, has once again booked us exclusive use of the Well Youth Hostel for the night.  We will have vehicle support, with a van (that Ian Doe has kindly agreed to drive) in which to put your overnight kit bags.

And the cost for the weekend?  Only £20 per person.  This includes accommodation, breakfast, and a contribution towards vehicle support.  You will need to pay for your meal Saturday night, which will be at a local pub.

There are only 25 places available, so send your cheque for £20 payable to "Velo Club Norwich" to Neil at 40 Chestnut Hill, Eaton, Norwich, NR4 6NL.

Email us here at veloclubnorwich@hotmail.co.uk if you have any questions or need anymore information.

VCN Road Race 2008

VC Norwich Road Race 2008

Over 50 entered, about 30 started but only a dozen finished...

It rained hard all morning and a pedalo would have been better than a bike for some sections! There were 9 VCN entrants who all started but the puncture pixie cruelly eliminated Gary Funnell, Jim Moss and Graham O'Hara almost as soon as they started. Clive Rayner and David Davies were quickly dropped (though David carried on for another 4 laps for some masochistic reason). Neil Vaughan, Tim Lernton, Graham Brown and Tim Skinner finished with Neil taking second place.

Despite the awful weather it was a success and all the club members and family involved in running it deserves a lot of credit, particularly Phil Hargreaves. Let's hope for better weather next time - it could hardly be worse!

See the full official report of the race here.
